VocTap is a browser-based English-learning extension for webpage lookup, YouTube subtitle lookup, local saved words, local saved subtitle lines, and AI-powered explanations.
In the Chrome Web Store build, webpage lookup, YouTube lookup, and AI-powered word lookup are enabled by default and can be turned off in the extension settings.
VocTap stores saved words, saved subtitle lines, review state, onboarding choices, feature toggles, and local extension settings in your browser so the extension works without an account.
This local storage is used to remember what you saved, what features you enabled, and how the extension should behave on your device.
The Chrome Web Store build of VocTap does not require sign-in, cloud sync, or background account sessions for core lookup, save, and review features.
Core extension use is designed to work without creating or logging into an account.
Dictionary, example, and text-to-speech requests send the selected lookup word or phrase to the third-party services needed to provide those features.
When AI-powered lookup is on, selecting a webpage word or tapping a YouTube subtitle word can automatically send the selected word and surrounding context through VocTap's backend to Groq, Gemini.
When you use the subtitle-line AI icon on YouTube, VocTap can also send subtitle line text and an optional video title to generate the requested line explanation.
When AI-powered lookup or a subtitle-line AI action runs, VocTap sends the minimum request payload needed to generate that explanation through its backend to the AI providers enabled at launch: Groq, Gemini.
The live launch AI provider set for VocTap is: Groq, Gemini.
Only the providers listed in this section are part of the public AI disclosure for the Chrome Web Store release.
VocTap uses an anonymous install identifier and short-lived request counters to detect abuse and rate limit AI usage.
Install-level AI tracking data is retained for up to 30 days, and short-lived request counters are retained only as long as needed for throttling.
Users can turn AI-powered lookup off, can turn webpage lookup and YouTube lookup on or off, and can review or change those settings again later in the extension.
Users can also delete saved words and saved subtitle lines locally from the extension.
VocTap is intended for general language-learning use and is not directed specifically at young children.
If you are responsible for a child using the browser, please supervise how optional online features are used.
VocTap may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the product changes or as legal and platform requirements evolve.
